First trip on the Cal 29 My New Pearl Export Series ELX-825

Our Cal 29 - Scotch Mist

This blog has been ignored for a few months now because I bought a sailboat. I purchased a Cal 29 which was in quite a state but came at a good price, and have been traveling to it every weekend for 3 months now, and it is almost ready for a shakedown sail. Here are a few pics of it:

When I bought it, I received the boat, a tender (almost sunk), a mast sitting at a rigging company, a motor (in pails in the back of the guys truck) and a ton of bits & pieces. I did the rigging first and had the mast stepped, then I spent a couple months worth of weekends cleaning and reassembling the interior, redoing the electronics, redoing the freshwater systems, and generally getting the boat into a usable state. At the same time I started rebuilding the motor.

Rebuilding the old Volvo Penta MB10-A was a bit of work, but finally, on July 10, 2009 I started it, for the first time:

So here we are. This weekend I am going to add the motor to the boat, and if all goes well, next weekend I can give here a shakedown sail :). More to come…

  1. nice site, good luck with your shakedown sail. I’m also rebuilding a ‘74 Cal29 with MB10A motor on lake ontario. I’ve upgraded to electronic fuel pump and EMPI DIS ignition because the Volvo/Marna motors parts are so expensive. Can’t get gaskets for the Solex VBN2 carb, which is leaking so I can’t keep the motor going. Did you find a kit to rebuild the carb?

  2. Hi Joe,

You can get the parts list on the volvo site, I think yours will be carb #834204. Pick your gaskets and any volvo marine store can still get them. I know they aren’t cheap :( I went this way for a few things, but there was a new set of gaskets with the motor when I got the boat so I didn’t have to order those… I had to buy new frost plugs and those ran me $30.00.

I have a local dealer who just happens to have a wall of shame for the MB10A so I was able to find a few crucial pieces through them.
