Cal 29 Under Spinnaker
Kaj (who is awesome btw) gave me his old spinnaker off of “Capricorn” as he no longer has the boat so the plan was to go out Sunday and test it out.
Got up at 6 on Sunday morning. Kaj was over by 6:45 and after a coffee, he ran me up in the bosuns chair to affix a spinnaker block and halyard at the top of the mast. We got that on and then had some oatmeal for breakfast.
Wendy came along at 8:30 and we went out with for a 19+ mile trip to test the spinnaker out.
The forecast was for “calm” and “variable <5km” so we weren’t expecting much wind, which is fine as we were to work on light airs sailing with Scotch Mist :-).
The run south was quick, and we got into the lee of James Island and ran up the spinnaker, we then ran down Sidney channel with the spin and came about to start the beat north under genoa and main. It was a 4.5 hour trip from the bottom of the channel to the marina and it was a great way to spend a Sunday.
The Spinnaker Kaj gave me is in a sock (A ChuteScoop) but it is currently twisted at the head, so I need to get that fixed up before using it again. The outboard needs some attention too, as need to fix the spring for the starter cord and get some nice fat wiring to run from the battery to the outboard to utilize the electric start. Once this is all done, I have a track to put on the mast to fly the symmetrical spinnaker so when I am alone, I won’t have to jury rig it. All in all it was a really nice Sunday!
